You can leave this page with a real career change plan instead of a folder of half-finished notes. Claude is good at holding several moving parts at once: the job you have, the job you want, your savings, and the hours you actually have free. The five prompts below turn that mess into steps you can start this week. Nothing here is gated, and there is no signup.
Before you start: the variables
Every prompt pulls from the same small set of details. Fill these in once, then reuse them.
| Variable | What to fill in |
|---|---|
| [current role] | The job title you hold today |
| [target role] | The role you want next |
| [transferable skills] | Three skills that carry over to the new field |
| [time budget] | Hours per week you can realistically commit |
| [runway] | Months of income or savings you can rely on |
| [constraint] | The one thing you cannot change, like a location or a fixed schedule |
The prompts
1. Map transferable skills to a new role
I work as a [current role] and I want to move into a [target role]. List the skills from my current job that transfer directly, the ones that transfer with a small reframe, and the ones I am missing. Use [transferable skills] as a starting point, then add what I overlooked. Return a three-column table.
What it does: Turns your existing experience into evidence you can put in front of a hiring manager.
How to use: replace [current role], [target role], and [transferable skills] with your own; keep the rest as is.
2. Build a 90-day pivot plan
Give me a 90-day plan to move from [current role] toward [target role]. I can commit [time budget] per week. Break the plan into weeks, and for each week give me one learning task, one networking task, and one proof task. Flag anything that depends on [runway].
What it does: Converts a vague goal into a weekly checklist with three tracks running at once.
How to use: replace [current role], [target role], [time budget], and [runway]; keep the rest as is.
3. Order the skill gaps by payoff
Here are the skills I have: [current skills]. Here is the role I want: [target role]. Rank the gaps by how much they affect my chances of getting hired, not by how fun they are to learn. For each gap, name the smallest project that would prove I can do it.
What it does: Stops you from learning in a random order and points you at portfolio-ready proof.
How to use: replace [current skills] and [target role]; keep the rest as is.
4. Draft outreach to people in the field
Write a short message I can send to a [contact type] at a company in [target industry]. My goal is a 15-minute conversation about [target role], not a job ask. Keep it under 90 words, make it specific to their work, and end with one easy question.
What it does: Gives you a message that earns a reply instead of landing in the ignore pile.
How to use: replace [contact type], [target industry], and [target role]; keep the rest as is.
5. Stress-test the numbers before you leap
My monthly expenses are [monthly expenses] and I have [runway] of savings. I am considering a move into [target role]. List the three money risks that would derail this plan fastest, and for each one give me a simple trigger that tells me to pause or adjust.
What it does: Turns free-floating anxiety about money into named risks with clear tripwires.
How to use: replace [monthly expenses], [runway], and [target role]; keep the rest as is.
A quick worked example
Take prompt 2 and fill it in for a support lead moving into product management:
Give me a 90-day plan to move from customer support lead toward associate product manager. I can commit 5 hours per week. Break the plan into weeks, and for each week give me one learning task, one networking task, and one proof task. Flag anything that depends on 6 months of savings.
That is the whole swap. Change the variables and the same prompt works for a teacher moving into instructional design or an analyst moving into data science. Keep your [constraint] in mind when you review the output: if the plan assumes you can relocate and you cannot, tell Claude to drop those options.
