Most resume summaries get skipped because they open with a job title and a list of adjectives. The recruiter already knows your title. What they want is the one paragraph that says what you do, who you have done it for, and why it matters for this role. These five ChatGPT prompts help you write that paragraph from what you have, then tailor it to each job you apply for.
Before you start: the variables
| [Variable] | What to fill in |
|---|---|
| [target role] | The exact job title you are applying for. |
| [years of experience] | How long you have done this work, such as five years. |
| [key skills] | The two or three skills the role cares about most. |
| [industry] | The sector or field, so the wording fits your market. |
| [job posting] | The text of the posting when you want a tailored version. |
The prompts
1. Draft a summary from your background
Write a resume summary for a [target role] with [years of experience] of experience in [industry]. Lead with the value I bring, not with my job title. Use these skills: [key skills]. Keep it to three lines and write in first person implied, meaning no "I" at the start of every sentence.
What it does: Turns your raw background into a focused opening that leads with value instead of a label.
How to use: replace [target role], [years of experience], [industry], and [key skills]; keep the rest as is.
2. Tailor it to a specific posting
Here is a job posting: [job posting]. Rewrite my summary so it matches the language and priorities in this posting without copying its wording. My background is a [target role] with [years of experience]. Keep it three lines and every claim truthful to what the posting asks for.
What it does: Aligns your opening with what one employer is asking for, so it reads as a match.
How to use: paste the posting into [job posting] and set [target role] and [years of experience]; keep the rest as is.
3. Turn duties into results
Here are my job duties: [duty list]. Rewrite the strongest three as outcome-focused lines for a resume summary, using concrete verbs. Do not invent any numbers — if a result has no figure, describe the change in plain words instead.
What it does: Reworks responsibilities into results, which are what hiring managers scan for.
How to use: paste your duties into [duty list]; keep the rest as is.
4. Cut a summary that rambles
Here is my current resume summary: [draft summary]. Cut it to three tight lines without losing the core skills or the [target role] focus. Remove any filler adjectives, then list the words you deleted and why each one was empty.
What it does: Trims an overlong summary into something a busy reader will finish.
How to use: paste your draft into [draft summary] and set [target role]; keep the rest as is.
5. Write variants for different roles
Using my background as a [target role] with [years of experience] in [industry], write three short summary variants aimed at these roles: [list of roles]. Keep the same facts but shift the emphasis so each version speaks to that role's priorities.
What it does: Gives you a version of your summary for each type of role you target.
How to use: replace [target role], [years of experience], [industry], and [list of roles]; keep the rest as is.
A quick worked example
Take prompt 1. Suppose [target role] is marketing manager, [years of experience] is six years, [industry] is B2B software, and [key skills] are lifecycle campaigns and funnel analysis.
The model returns something like: “Marketing manager with six years in B2B software, focused on lifecycle campaigns that move trial users to paying accounts. Strong on funnel analysis and turning data into clear next steps. Looking to own the full demand program for a growing product team.”
Three lines, no filler, and it opens with what you do rather than your title. From there, run prompt 2 for each posting you apply to.
